"HYGEE"

As another year draws to a close we're looking forward to a cosy festive gathering and are set to bring a bit of  Scandinavian soul to our next event "HYGEE"!

From the Norwegian word meaning ‘wellbeing’, HYGEE , pronounced "hoo-ga”, is an idea rooted in the Danish sense of togetherness.  It describes a warm atmosphere, enjoying the good things in life with good people.  As a concept it couldn’t be any more in sync with the ethos of Creative Recovery and will be in full swing at our festive gathering which this year will be in partnership with the Barnsley Drug and Alcohol Action team.

So, join us on Wednesday 30th December, from sunset (3.53pm) - 9pm as the lights of St Paul’s Church Hall will be dimmed in place for heart-warming fires, music, candlelight, contentment, Winter supper, spiced drinks & smiles!

Post Christmas it is an opportunity to gather, cosy in and share in the comfort and joy of some good ole’ community spirit.

So, do as the Danes do and "HYGEE"!

Creative Recovery Hits the Headlines!

It was Light's Camera, Action! on Saturday as Creative Recovery hit the small screen featuring on both ITV's news programme, Calendar and BBC 1's quiz show Pointless!

As Creative Recovery took to the streets with the “I Matter” Campaign in support of World Mental Health Day, ITV's news programme Calendar came down to capture the day's events.

In monochrome branded t-shirts armed with post cards and balloons our wonderful participants surprised Saturday shoppers by giving out lots of "I Matter" goodies along with glittery gift boxes, all of which shared the message, “I Matter” “You Matter” “We matter”.

This special campaign was developed by participants of Creative Recovery, all of whom have experienced their own Mental health problems, and it marks World Mental Day and beyond.

Together with the council and community/therapy groups O.S.C.A.R (Offload, share, care and relax) & TADS (Therapies for Anxiety and depression.) we shared the ‘I Matter’ message with some glorious live music around our signature street piano! We would also like to say a massive thank you to Debbie Baxter, Dave Lawton, Dave Kaye and Dave Smith who have worked tirelessly to create the super "I Matter" trailer which was in situ on the day.

Our efforts hit the headlines with the days antics being featured on Calendar throughout the day, and a special appearance by our very own Hannah Parrot who bravely shared her own experience of battling with depression as a teenager.

Meanwhile, if you flicked the channel there was more Creative Recovery coverage as Barnsley based Poet Ian McMillan nominated Creative Recovery as his chosen charity on the BBC 1 quiz show, Pointless! It is safe to say we were thrilled with £250 win and more so with the lovely words. Big thanks Ian, both were much appreciated!

I Matter, You Matter, We Matter

"I Matter" is a special campaign developed by Creative Recovery to mark World Mental Health Day and beyond.

Inspired by this year's theme, DIGNITY, 'I Matter' is an important reminder that no matter who you are or where you are from. We care.

"We are all just regular people seeking the same thing. The bloke on the street, the woman in the class room, the rich the poor, black , white, gay, straight, you and me - we all just want to know that we matter.
The greatest pain in life is to be invisible.
So keep sharing your stories, help people to see themselves and for a moment glimpse the power to change and the power to triumph.
We all matter."

On Saturday 10th October we'll be joining forces with Barnsley Council to support World Mental Health Day in our creative signature way. Look out for us as we share our special message!

For further information on World Mental Health Day visit the Mental Health Foundation. Or if you would like help and advice contact MIND Rotherham & Barnsley, or the Mental Health Access Team on 01226 707600.

Let this be a daily reminder.

I matter,

you matter,

we matter.

Today, tomorrow and always.

Summer so Far!

Well it's been a busy old' Summer with lots of creative happenings in some of our favourite spots!

Inspired by the question: What would you say if the world was listening?
UPLIFTERS engaged in a number of activities designed to give us all a boost through being creative whilst exploring issues that are real to us.

Here's a few snapshots of our Summer so far!

Taking Inspiration from the exhibition, 'A World to Win: Posters of Protest and Revolution' at the Civic Gallery, UPLIFTERS enjoyed a screen printing workshop, designing and making their very own protest posters. The result of which was the brilliant design for our Protest Podium promo!

Next up it was a trip to the beautiful Northern College for our 'Be the Change' Residential. Inspired by it's political roots, this two day programme looked at what makes a great speech and developing the confidence to find our voice. With UPLIFTERS taking to the Roman Temple on our final night to make their voices heard!

Full of ideas and material for personal manifestoes it was time to pen to paper with a special 2 day writing workshop, 'Words are Power!' with poet, James Nash, in preparation for our Podium Protest!

And then, a day to be heard, to stand up and be counted!

The UPLIFT Podium Protest saw people from all walks of life share their experiences and vision for a better world. Chilling on Mandela Gardens with our homemade revolution snacks, and getting involved in the Protest Street art wall, it was a day for speakers, poets and musicians, one and all to engage in positive social activism! And what a fab day it was!

Wednesday 1 April 2015

UPLIFT is heading down to the woods....come join us! A Wombwell Wood Takeover, 25th and 26th of April

Come and play with our team of UPLIFT artists. Rediscover this historic woodland, encounter its' beasts and beauties; both real and imagined and create art and music inspired by these wonderful woods.

On Saturday the takeover begins at 11am. We invite all to help us to build our homestead for the weekend; gathering wood for our campfire and helping to create our forest theatre in the trees.  Campfire crafts include, making charcoal for drawing and casting metal trinkets from small woodland finds.
Throughout the day we’ll prepare our shadow theatre, building woodland instruments and telling stories inspired as the woodland is starting to spring to life following a long winter sleep.  Create your own mini shadow theatre using reclaimed boxes, shadow puppets and lighting effects.
Into the woods we go with artist James Brunt to find the perfect place for land art, while Roseanna encourages you to ‘read the woodland’, unearthing its ancient past and the secret lives of it's Beasts and Beauties.
UPLIFTERS are invited for a special soiree before the Forest Theatre Workshop from 4-6.30pm where we will prepare the scene for the evening and enjoy some fire-side snacks!

From 6.30pm we will settle in and take warmth by the fire for a special shadow puppet theatre show, campfire songs and magical storytelling moments. This is where we will remain until the day closes at around 9pm.
Sunday is planned to be very much a family affair with our special visitor "The Bear", and fabulous interactive live Latin band, hopefully bringing the sunshine! Join us from 12 noon and bring your own picnic, the first hopefully of many this year. Be part of The National Bluebell Survey; find them and then paint them in our woodland art studio.  With more land art, informative walks, stalls and a workshop making butterfly feeders there’s many ways to connect with and learn about this stunning woodland that's right on your doorstep.
